NOMINATIONS are open for an honour which celebrates people who have given “extensive and distinguished service to the community”.

Residents have the opportunity to be nominated for the award of Honorary Freeman of the Town of Maldon.

The town council is looking for nominees who have benefited Maldon.

A spokesman said: “The service given by nominees should go beyond the occupational and will include service to organisations or groups of a largely voluntary nature.”

After the votes have been cast the winners will be invited to the annual mayor-making and other formal civic events, be placed in the civic procession with past town mayors and be invited to other town functions.

The Freeman title is honorary only and for life.

The council spokesman said: “From time to time members of the community demonstrate outstanding commitment and contribution to the social, cultural and educational benefit of the town.

“Maldon, which has a long history of civic pride, looks to recognise these contributions.

“The nominee must have made an outstanding contribution to the town, such that the nominee’s collective contribution can be seen to stand above the contributions made by most other people.”

To nominate someone, either complete the nomination form at maldontowncouncil.gov.uk/your-mayor-2/freedom-of-maldon/ or contact the town hall for a copy by emailing townclerk@maldontowncouncil.gov.uk.

The deadline for nominations is December 1.
