CROWDS gathered on Maldon's shoreline as a popular event returned to town.

Although the Maldon Town Regatta has been held for generations, the event has only existed in current form since 2002.

The Regatta returned once again this month bringing exciting events for visitors to enjoy on the day.

These events were organised by a small volunteer committee.

A spokesperson for the committee said: “ On the water there were two races, the first from West Mersea to Osea Island starting at 8am.

“Light winds made it a difficult sail. 32 boats entered the racing.

“The second race was from Osea Island to Maldon, ending in a spectacular Parade of Sail up to the Hythe quay. Spectators lined both the Promenade and the quay to see this.

“On the quay activities started at 10am with 19 stalls selling various goods and food. “Entertainment was provided, opening with the excellent Plume Academy Saxaphone group. “Shanty singers also performed to everyone's enjoyment.

“Probably the star of the entertainment was the Punch and Judy show with both children and adults cheering Judy along and shouting at the alligator.”

With this year’s event now passed, the next Maldon Town Regatta will take place on September 21, 2024.
