A MAN has been arrested as part of an investigation into allegations of financial crime and the safeguarding of children.

An investigation by police led to the arrest of a man who was publicly known to have been involved in Maldon Carnival.

A spokesman for Essex Police has confirmed the investigation “is in its early stages" and he has been released on bail.

Details of the alleged incident are not yet known and no formal charge has been made at this stage of the investigation.

Maldon Carnival has since confirmed the man is no longer part of the event.

Chairman Keith Howes said there is no police investigation into the carnival.

Mr Howes said: “The person involved in the alleged incident is no longer part of Maldon Carnival.

“A new board of directors and committee were elected at the AGM on September 7.

“As the new chairman of Maldon Carnival, I have contacted Essex Police who ensure me there is no investigation into the carnival.”

The carnival was unsure if it had the facilities to continue the event due to a lack of volunteers.

Following a plea from organisers, the latest annual general meeting was a success and organisers confirmed the event looks to be in a strong position to return next year.

A spokesman for the carnival said: “Thanks to everyone who joined us at the carnival AGM.

“It was a fantastic meeting, and it looks like we'll be back next year with an even bigger and better procession.”

Maldon Carnival is a privately run event which is supported by Maldon Town Council every year.

A spokesman for Maldon Town Council said: “Maldon Carnival is a separate stand-alone entity and the town council does not hold a position on the board.

“The town mayor of Maldon holds the ceremonial position of president of the carnival during their term in office. Maldon Town Council is fully co-operating with the authorities on this matter.”
