A DEVELOPMENT of up to 57 homes could be set to take shape on an area of unused land in a small village.

Outline plans have been submitted to Maldon District Council for up to 57 homes in Mayland.

The plans look to build a development on land at the junction of Steeple Road and Mill Road.

The existing 4.67 acres site was a former plant growers’ nursery which now has overgrown hedgerows and derelict greenhouses.

There are a total of 88 public objections to the plans with one person saying: “Our roads, doctors, schools, public transport can't cope as it is in this area building more houses is just not sustainable.”

Another resident said: “Our little village just cannot cope with anymore people. It is overcrowded already, the schools are full, as are the doctors.

“Getting to the shops is a nightmare due to the number of other residents trying to get there too.

“The location is a very dangerous bend, and would generate more accidents, further restricting access to the Dengie.

“It's an important wildlife habitat, animals are being squeezed out of existence by needless building.

“There are 43 houses for sale at the moment in Mayland...I wonder how many are moving out to get away from further development.”
