CASH has been secured to replace a pontoon at Burnham-on-Crouch which was destroyed in a major storm more than a year ago.

The pontoon was well-loved by residents and visitors to Burnham and also served as a pick-up and drop-off point for the passenger ferry to Wallasea before it was destroyed by Storm Eunice in February 2022.

Maldon District Council has now secured funding to replace the structure and has started the tender process to appoint an architect and other experts to deliver the project, with installation planned for late 2024.

Council service delivery director Richard Holmes said: “It is clearly great news that we have been able to secure the funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund which will enable the project to be delivered.

“It will take some time to deliver, as it is a complex project and due processes have to be followed.”

“However, the project has started, and updates will be provided as the project progresses.”

The council says it will work with the community during the design process to ensure the new pontoon is something everyone can be proud of.

The project will need planning permission and special permits, and no waterside engineering can take place over winter.
