WINNERS of prestigious town awards recognising their hard work over the past year have been announced.

The Maldon Community Awards ceremony celebrated residents in Maldon who have been nominated for their contribution to the town.

The Maldon Film Club was given an art and culture award for providing culture to the town and offering a multitude of films and entertainment throughout the year.

The award for the Best Business Contribution to the Community was awarded to Borough Carpets' Ian Liston.

Mr Liston was given the award for supporting people in need in the community, charities and championing the independent businesses in the town believing in the principle of Shop Local.

Bluebird Care, the care service based at 40 White Horse Lane, Maldon, which offers both live in and home care was selected as the Carer of the Year.

A spokesman for Maldon Town Council said: “Carer of the Year is awarded to Bluebird Care who work tirelessly to offer a better quality of life to those who wish to stay at home and especially for Molly who sprinkles a little bit of happiness wherever she goes.”

The award for the Citizen of the Year was given to Alan Smith, who raised thousands of pounds for charitable causes and has made a significant contribution to Maldon.

A Community Iimpact award was given to John Rowlinson, a volunteer at the Essex Search and Rescue Service.

Another Community Impact award was given to Kevin Jennings from the Salvation Army to recognise his work supporting the Maldon community.

The award for Educator of the Year was awarded to Andy Robinson at Plume Academy.

A council spokesman said: “Educator of the Year was awarded to Andy Robinson, Plume Academy for his enthusiastic interaction with students and teachers and his creative methods.

“He is quite often found helping students at lunchtime, mentoring trainees and newly qualified teachers and actively participating in getting students through the Duke of Edinburgh award schemes.”

Margaret Beesley from Home Start was awarded as the Long Service Volunteer for her hard work and fundraising.

The new Outstanding Long Service Volunteer award was given to Wendy Munnion for her creativity and designs including her floral displays at Moot Hall and flower festivals.

William Frostick, a student at Plume Academy was awarded the Young Achiever of the Year award for his “determination and drive in the most difficult of circumstances".

Julie Taylor was awarded the Town Mayor’s award for Community Service for her contribution to improving the lives of others through her fundraising, education of knife crime, culinary skills offering hot meals to those in need, delivering food parcels and always going above and beyond.

The Town Mayors' special recognition award was presented to William Geller for his creative contributions to the town.

Mr Gellar is a member of the Maldon Art Club, former publicity officer and charity chairman at Moot Hall and designer of the Maldon Heritage signs in the town.
