CHILDREN’S book characters were brought to life as youngsters - and their parents - went all out to mark World Book Day.

The annual event focuses on the joy of reading and encourages children to dress up as characters from their favourite books.

Thousands of children got involved in the festivities across Essex and Maldon schools prepared activities for their best-dressed pupils. 

Maldon Court Preparatory School have enjoyed a fantastic themed World Book Day.

All of the children dressed up as Wally from the popular book series Where’s Wally?

A school spokesman said: "The overall result was fantastic - what a superb day it was.

"The children were so excited to all come into school dressed up in their character.

"We even had Maisie, the school dog, join in with the theme as she wore her t-shirt too.

"The children enjoyed some wonderful activities with different teachers and then they all enjoyed a brilliant Where’s Wally?-themed school lunch.

Headteacher Elaine Mason said: "We were keen to try something a little different for World Book Day this year.

"All of the school community embraced it and the result was brilliant.

"The children had a wonderful day and most importantly we all had fun whilst celebrating the importance that books have in our lives."

Children from St Cedds C E Primary also had a blast, dressing up as their heroes and favourite characters.

A St Cedds spokesman said: "We had a fabulous day!

"Competition for the best-dressed pupil was won by Amber, Ida and Alfie, who won a lovely wooden bookmark from the Vine Schools Trust."

The pupils were dressed as characters from world-known series like Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, superheroes from Marvel or even toys from Toy Story. 

For World Book Day celebrations, McDonald’s is also giving away books completely for free at restaurants across the country.

Families can pick up Paddington: Out and About and Rocket Rules in restaurants across Essex.
