TEENAGE keeper Joe Whitney was the unexpected star of the Heybridge Swifts show after they lost first-choice number one Callum Chafer to a dislocated shoulder just 24 minutes into Tuesday’s 2-1 home win over Witham Town, writes JON LONGMAN.

The 16-year-old’s debut was memorable for two stunning saves and several timely punches to lift the Swifts back into the fifth and final play-off place.

Celebrating his Swifts debut, Whitney said: “It was quite a surreal feeling. I have been waiting all season for the opportunity to come along.

“It was a bit unexpected but I had to get in the zone pretty quickly. I felt a bit nervous and was shaking a bit while I was getting my stuff on.

“It is a great feeling helping to get three points. I cannot put into words how happy I am. Coming away with three points is all that matters.”

Woodwork denied Matt Price a goal from his chip over the keeper and Rob Harvey’s curling cross hit the far post before the Swifts took an 18th minute lead.

Fog was threatening as Sam Carter met Lee Noble’s free kick with a blistering header that fizzed past keeper Rhys Madden.

The Swifts secured victory thanks to another talented teenager, 17 year old Freddie Price, who claimed the assist for creating the 56th minute winner.

Freddie surged down the left flank before stroking the ball into the path of Harvey who lashed the ball home for his ninth goal of the season.

Witham had already sent on veteran striker Adam Vyse in an attempt to snatch an equaliser but they only bagged Farai Tsingano’s consolation ten minutes from time

“This was a fantastic result in a hard-fought game,” said manager Steve Tilson, who praised his teenage heroes.

“There were a couple more injury setbacks with Callum’s shoulder popping out before being popped back in again.

“But Joe came on and at just 16 years old did a fantastic job. He stood up to be counted and made two really good saves.

“I had to take Louie Arrowsmith off at half-time and Freddie came in and did really well.”

The Swifts head for AFC Sudbury on Saturday (3pm) as the only club who can do the double over the North Division leaders this season.
