At the March meeting of the parish council, various matters were discussed and decided upon.

The resurfacing of the pavement by the King's Head will be done during a school holiday period but not until the next financial year.

Regarding the airfield, it is confirmed that police notices are now in place, and white lines will be painted and a no through road sign erected by Highways.

Under planning there was no objection to the proposed special needs room in St Cedd's School.

Rugby Posts. The council was in favour of the proposal to install rugby posts, and various avenues of grant funding were discussed.

A decision was made that it would be appropriate to install a hardwood bench, placed by the airfield memorial, in memory of Anne Morris, late clerk to the parish council. In connection with the restoration of the airfield memorial, Ernie Bateman offered to organise a working party.

Nuclear Decommissioning Agency - a representative of the NDA will be invited to the April meeting of the council, together with someone from the Bradwell site.

Aircraft stacking over Bradwell.

There is a proposal that aircraft flying into City Airport might be stacked over our area awaiting a landing slot. The consultation period finished on May 22. If you would like more information about this proposal, or comment on it, please contact Donna Tristram on 776736 or Jean Allen on 776547.

New Power Station. Jean Allen, chairman, had attended a meeting in Maldon outlining various matters concerning a possible second nuclear power station, namely Bradwell B. Many issued were under consideration nationally.

Bradwell was one of four favourite sites and a decision would be made in 2009, with construction, probably with materials being brought in by sea, beginning in 2012, should this site be chosen.

BRADWELL ON SEA WI

On March 25, members of Bradwell WI enjoyed a very successful progressive party, or you could call it a safari supper, since it involved driving and eating!

Julie Smith gets all the credit for organisation, four different venues for each of three courses.

It works like this: everyone is told where to go for their first course, and after enjoying the starter, an envelope is opened by the hostess, giving instructions as to where each person should then go for the main course. Finally everyone finishes up at one venue for desserts and coffee. Such is a progressive party, where you all get progressively more full of delicious food, and drive to members' homes in parts of Bradwell, Tillingham and St Lawrence that you hadn't previously visited. Add to all this the complication that some members don't drive, and you see why Julie deserves a huge thank you for organising everything.

Of course, an evening like this is only possible because there are people willing to act as cooks as hosts, so a big thank you to them too.

LONDON MARATHON

A reminder that you have a few days left to add your name to the list of sponsors for Roy Webber on 776138 or by putting your name to the sponsorship list at the back of St.Thomas's. Roy at 62 has promised wife Carol that this will be his last marathon and he would like it to be a bumper year for his chosen, and worthwhile charity, the Essex Air Ambulance.

AIRFIELD WAR MEMORIAL

IF you would like to be part of a work party to clean and repoint all the surrounding stonework of the memorial, please contact Ernie Bateman on 776666. The weekends currently being considered are April 19/20, or April 26/27.

ST.CEDD'S ECO SCHOOL GREEN FLAG AWARD

Our local church primary school, St Cedd's, has been awarded the Green Flag. All that is needed now is a pole to fly it from! St Cedd's is one of only 13 schools in Essex to be awarded such a flag and congratulations are in order for their efforts over the past two years in obtaining this coveted trophy.

Among many other eco-friendly activities £377 has been raised for rain forest concern, and the school has stopped 7.5 acres of rainforest in South America from being chopped down. The Eco School representative, Mr Perry, who visited the school to judge' their efforts also congratulated them on their visit to Tesco's and getting free Bags for Life for the whole school. The question now is, are the children's parents actually using them?

The school says thank you for all the unwanted mobile phones kindly donated, but no more for now please.

BOOKWORMS BOOK CLUB

Numbers attending the March meeting fell to below double figures for the first time, but those attending still had a lively conversation about literature and much more two hours' plus get together at the King's Head. The general thumbs down was given to the March book, Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley. Is this a first, I wonder, for the club? The three main reasons given was that there was too much detail about horses, horse breeding and racing to be of general interest; the book was too American for British readers, and their interest was not grabbed early enough. Better luck on April 24 when the book under discussion will be Donna Tartt's The Secret History. The May date is the 29th, the book The Islamist by Ed Husain, and looking ahead to June 26 the book chosen is A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon.

MOBILE POLICE STATION

This will be in Bradwell Village Hall on Thursday April 17 from 2pm to 4.30pm and in St Lawrence by the post office from 11am to 1.30pm the same day.

CHURCH SERVICES SUNDAY April 13 Service for all the Church Family at St Thomas's 10.30am. At 6.30pm Evening Communion also at St.Thomas's.

The usual Wednesday Communion at the Chapel at 8am.

DECOMMISSIONING CUTBACKS AT BRADWELL

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has now confirmed that decommissioning at Bradwell is likely to take nearer to 100 years, instead of the 25 to 30 years announced when the NDA was set up.

Although Government funding for decommissioning has actually been increased slightly, the bulk of these funds will now be "prioritised"

to clearing up the high hazard facilities at Sellafield and Dounreay. This means that far less than was expected will be available for decommissioning work here at Bradwell and other similar sites.

Amongst other options, the Bradwell staff have been asked to identify the minimum cost of putting the site into a "safe and secure state".

INVITATION FROM BRADWELL PARISH COUNCIL

The public are welcome to attend a meeting of Bradwell Parish Council on Monday April 21 at 8pm in the Committee Room of the Village Hall to hear Richard Mrowicki and Clive Woods of the NDA explain the reasons for these cutbacks.
