THE parish is hoping to restart a magazine. It may be quarterly, depending on contributions.

Anything of interest of no more than 300 word - short stories, articles, poetry, book reviews, recipes and classified ads - would all be welcome. The editor is Jenny Andrews and her e-mail address is jennylaurie@hotmail .com

RINGING IN

IS anyone interested in learning how to ring the church bells? If so the team will be pleased to see you at the bell tower any Wednesday evening at 7.30pm.

WI

AT our meeting on February 12, John Davy talked to us about Essex workhouses.

Many of you will have seen the review by Marjorie Edwards, in the Essex WI News, of the book on the same subject. Mr Davy's talk was very enlightening and we were shown pictures of the original workhouse at the bottom of Market Hill.

When the parish councillors decided in 1834 that these small almshouses were not cost-effective, the Union Workhouses were built - one is now St Peter's Hospital.

Maldon was responsible for some 24 outlying villages and areas, and Chelmsford had room for 100 inmates.

At the beginning of the 20th century, children were not taken into workhouses and sent instead to special children's homes. Soon afterwards, workhouses were abolished.

At the end of the meeting, the competition was judged and Jean Smith's was the best porridge bowl, with Hazel Asher and Maureen Pomphrett second and third.

Flower of the month was won by Jenny Beale, with Gill Rowsell in second and Shirley Thorp third.

All members must note that as Peter Simpson is too ill to speak to us on March 11 our speaker will be Kay Beighton. Her talk is entitled Splendours of the Nile. The competition will be for a Souvenir of Egypt.

MUNDON WHITE HORSE

ON March 7, Itchy Blackmore will be performing and on March 24, the entertainer will be Dave Scott.
