A FATHER and son duo are preparing a mountainous adventure to raise money in memory of their lost godson.

Raf and Ethan Miedzwiedz, from Feering, will be taking on the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, to raise money for the Brompton Fountain, after the tragic death of baby Leo.

Leo was born with a congenital heart defect.

On April 26, 2019, Leo had an 11-hour open heart surgery which saved his life.

Surgeon Guido Michielon spent hours trying to repair Leo’s tiny mitral valve but that wasn’t possible, so he had to replace it with a metallic one.

However, Leo couldn’t be taken off bypass after his surgery, so they decided to put him on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, ECMO, to give his heart and lungs a rest, but it was 50/50 he would recover.

Leo sadly died on January 23, 2022, just after his third birthday.

Now, the pair are raising money for the Brompton Fountain, who work to support children with life-threatening medical conditions who are under the care of Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust.

Godmother Rebecca said: “It was a horrible and heartbreaking experience and was just devastating to lose him, but that is why we want to raise money and awareness of the Brompton Fountain.

“We are doing it in memory of him and to highlight how much the Brompton does for patients and supporting their families.”

Leo’s godfather Raf and his son Ethan, 11, are preparing to scale the three highest peaks in the UK next month.

The pair will first be climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland, followed by Scafell Pike in England, ending the challenge with Snowdon in Wales.

Rebecca said: “My husband and Ethan have always enjoyed climbing mountains, so they came up with the idea to do the Three Peaks.

“They have already climbed Snowdon and Scafell Pike, and Ethan is a little nervous about Ben Nevis, but I am sure they will smash it.

“It is just nice to see so much support already and the amount of awareness we are raising.”
