PLANS to take down a former mill and create new commercial units as well as apartments have been revealed.

The proposals include the demolition of the former mill on the Hasler's Mill site in Station Road in Maldon and creation of 14 business units and 9 apartments.

This includes the conversion and restoration of the former granary to potentially provide a restaurant and cafe on the ground floor and seperate offices above.

The former mill would be replaced with a 4/5 storey twin block of the 9 apartments as well as two retail units.

And two new blocks would be built to provide four commercial units each - two retail or mixed uses on the ground floor with separate offices above.

It comes after the refusal of a similar application in 2019.

The previous scheme proposed the demolition of existing buildings on the site to make way for 10 homes and five commercial units.

This new proposed development comprises a mixed use scheme as before but with a reduced residential element and greater emphasis on commercial development.

It is estimated at least 40 new jobs would be created just within the business units if the plans are given the green light.

The site has been identified as being part of a wider area in need of regeneration in the adopted local plan, and further expressed in the emerging Causeway Regeneration Area.

It has been allocated for employment uses, but the agent argues it has been considered a mixed-use development would be considered appropriate where it includes a substantive employment element.

This is to support economic growth within the district.

Maldon District Council will rule on the application.
