COVID cases are rising in the Maldon district, with cases up 30 per cent from the previous week.

Maldon has recorded 870 Covid-19 cases this week (as of December 21), according to data from Public Health England.

This is up 30.8 per cent from last week when 665.13 cases were recorded.

The data from Public Health England shows the number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 per 100,000 in the district.

The Government's interactive Covid map also breaks down each area in the district and colour codes them depending on how many cases there are.

All but two areas in Maldon are now highlighted dark purple which means the rate is more than 800 cases per 100,000 people.

Those not in dark purple are Mayland, Althorne & Cold Norton with a case rate of 709.9 per 100,000 people and Southminster, Bradwell & Dengie Peninsula with its case rate at 694.4.

Maldon North is the worst affected area in the district with the map showing a total of 66 cases in the seven days to December 17.

This is up 112.9 per cent with a case rate of 953.9 per 100,000 people.

Maldon South is also badly affected with 95 cases, a 63.8 per cent increase from the previous week.

It has a case rate of 1,226.3 per 100,000 people

Great Totham, Wickham Bishops & Woodham currently has a case rate of 1,079.4 per 100,000 people as it's cases have increased by 62 per cent.

The rates for each area of the rest of the district are as follows:

  • Tollesbury, Tolleshunt & Goldhanger - 63 cases, case rate at 969.7
  • Heybridge - 91 cases, 1,059.2 case rate
  • Burnham-on-Crouch - 75 cases, 912.3 case rate

Yesterday the UK reported a record 119,789 new daily Covid cases - the highest figure ever reported.

Meanwhile one in 45 people in the UK had Covid in the week to December 16, the Office for National Statistics estimates.
