CORONAVIRUS cases have surged in two areas in the district in the past week, the latest figures show.

An interactive government map displays colour-coded areas in each authority's neighbourhood wards to highlight the severity of its current coronavirus infection rate.

The colours range from white, yellow and green through to blue, dark purple and black.

The 'blackspots' on the map indicate areas where case rates per 100,000 people are higher than 800.

There are two areas in the Maldon district which have seen a dramatic rise in Covid cases, according to the map.

Southminster, Bradwell & the Dengie

The interactive map of cases shows a 'blackspot' in Southminster, Bradwell & the Dengie Peninsula.

This ward has seen an increase of Covid cases by a 69.2 per cent in the seven days to November 25, bringing the total to 88.

The area currently has a case rate of 954.9 per 100,000 people.

The map also shows a rise of cases in Burnham.

Cases in Burnham have surged in these seven days to a total of 109.

This is up by a whopping 81.7 per cent.

The case rate is now at 1,325.9 per 100,000 people.

But the rate of infection in the Maldon district as a whole now stands at 12,806 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 15,278.

The number of coronavirus cases in the district increased by 152 over the weekend, official figures show.
