TO celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 people across the UK are being encouraged to plant their own tree.

The Queen's Green Canopy aims to create a network of individual trees, avenues and woodlands in honour of The Queen's service and legacy.

Dengie Crops - a company based in Southminster - is partnering with Langthorns Plantery, a fellow Royal Warrant Holder based in Essex, to provide trees for their customers to win.

Dengie launched the competition on Monday (November 1) and the winners will be chosen and announced in National Tree Week - from November 27 to December 5.

The competition winners will be able to pick from a range of trees all of which will be supplied by Langthorns Plantery.

The plantery was established in 1977 by David and Philippa Cannon and is now run by their son Edward.

It specialises in producing top quality ornamental plants, shrubs and trees, including many uncommon and heritage species that are more difficult to obtain.

In 2017 it became the only Essex-based plant centre to be granted a Royal Warrant to Her Majesty the Queen as a supplier of ornamental plants, shrubs and trees.

Once planted the location of the trees can be uploaded to the The Queen’s Green Canopy map.

This is where you will already find the tree that Dengie’s technical manager Katie Williams and Langthorns' Edward Cannon planted at Dengie’s head office in Asheldham to kick off the campaign.

Katie said: “Our new office was completed just before lockdown and so we haven’t really had chance to give much thought to the area around it yet so this was a great opportunity to put in a new tree."

“We chose an Amelanchier Lamarchkii as it has very pretty flowers in spring and lovely autumn colour so we will be able to admire it throughout the year.

"I also love the fact that it started life just up the road in Suffolk, then Ed and his team have nurtured it here in Essex – that’s very low tree miles.”
