COMMUNITY leaders welcomed the news of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown.

The four-step plan will begin next month and restrictions should be fully lifted by late June, subject to infection rates in the country.

Maldon MP John Whittingdale said: “It is only possible due to the enormous success of the vaccination programme and I would like to thank not just those involved nationally but all our local health workers and volunteers who have been doing such a fantastic job, having already administered more than 100,000 vaccines to residents in Mid Essex so far.

“Of course, I understand that many individuals and businesses will be disappointed that the relaxation cannot come faster.

“However, having made such huge progress, it is essential that we continue to comply with the rules so that we minimise any risk of a resurgence of the virus and avoid any reimposition of the lockdown.

“I am also confident that the Government will continue to provide financial support to those most severely affected and I look forward to the Chancellor announcing further details in the Budget next week.”

Maldon District Council leader Wendy Stamp said: “I am pleased that the Prime Minister has set out a clear roadmap which gives us all a sense of hope for the future.

“This has been an extremely challenging time for businesses and residents, but the way in which the whole district has come together to help and support others is something that I hope is not lost as we move into the recovery phase.

“Over the coming months, as we gradually move through the Government’s roadmap to recovery, the council will continue to support the whole community, so that we can all once again enjoy the many things that we have missed, and support our businesses who will really need our help after such a difficult time.”
