A "LEGENDARY" world famous race has been given a later date by organisers hoping the coronavirus will have been subdued before the event takes place.
The Maldon Mud Race is a highly anticipated annual event which attracts visitors and press from across Europe.
Tens of thousands of visitors make their way to Promenade Park to watch the race which features hundreds of competitors battle it out to race through the thick Dengie mud.
The event this year was originally scheduled for May 23 but has now been pushed back due to the pandemic.
Organisers hope the UK's vaccination programme will have made a sufficient impact on the virus that they will be able to hold the event on Sunday, August 15.

The organisers also announced the event will be sponsored by the motor company Colchester Porsche.
Maldon Mud Race chairman Brian Farrington said: “As our first thoughts must be the health and safety of competitors, spectators, sponsors and our team, we feel a later date will allow for sufficient time for the vaccination programme to make a significant difference and to reduce the risks for all concerned.’
“The late summer event will enable our team to create a first class event and maximise results for our sponsors and charities alike, as well as give spectators a superb day out.
"As such, we are delighted to announce the race will now take place on Sunday, August 15, 2021.”
- Many competitors wear fancy dress
Other than Colchester Porsche, there will be new names supporting the event, including Maldon business PGR Builder and Timber Merchants, shortly to open in the area, as well as Maldon catering experts Events Factor, who will bring many artisan food and drink suppliers.
