THE Yorkshire Trading Company has made a return to Durham City after a break of more than four years.

The discount store has moved into the former Marks & Spencer, and later M&Co store, on Silver Street.

According to Indie Durham City, which is funded by the City of Durham Parish Council, the store officially opened on Sunday, November 22.

Last weekend, staff could be seen adding the finishing touches as new signs and branding went up.

The chain, which had a store in the former The Gates Shopping Centre on Milburngate, left the town in 2016 following the centre's redevelopment into The Riverwalk.

At the time, it occupied a large unit towards the North end of the shopping centre, near Wilko.

The chain has several stores at locations across the North-East and North Yorkshire, including in Northallerton, Washington and Whitby.

It is well-known for selling a wide range of goods including clothing, haberdashery, gardening and Christmas items.

It is understood the new store will open on a short-term lease, with the option to be extended.
