A family-run restaurant has temporarily closed after saying social distancing 'does not work'.

Sark, on Maldon High Street has closed for dine-in service today (Monday October 19).

In a statement, posted on the door of the restaurant, the owners said: "We have made the difficult decision to temporarily close Sark restaurant until further notice due to a rise in the number of cases in Essex.

"This decision is in the best interest of our staff, our guests and our community.

"After the last few days of restricting number we have decided that this is not sufficient in stopping the spread of the virus.

"Social distancing does not work in restaurants.

"Our NHS are working hard to save lives and we at Sark need to help in any way possible.

"The only way we can help to stop the spread is by closing our doors for dine-in.

"We need to fight this together and listen to our medically trained advisors.

"As we are a small family run business it has not been easy for us to take this decision. Please support us during this unprecedented closure.

"We sincerely hope that all our customer, your families and friends and our valued staff stay safe and healthy."
