WEM residents have been raising smiles as well as raising money for charity with a community scarecrow competition.

Since the beginning of August scarecrows of all shapes, sizes and themes have adorned various shops and gardens throughout the town, with the aim of raising money for the local youth charity fund.

Altogether the competition raised £600, with more than 50 scarecrows appearing around the town.

Prizes of food and drink hampers were on offer for the winners, donated from the Co-op, the Nest Cafe and the Fruitful Deli

Sue Holliday, a member of the committee that organised the event, was impressed with the 'fabulous' displays.

"It was the first time and just over 50 fabulous scarecrows entered," she said.

"More than 100 judging sheets were collected by the public to help the committee judge.

"Prizes were donated by Wem Co-Op with thanks to Simon Thornley, The Nest Cafe and Dee Morgan and The Fruitful Deli with Claire and Phil Glover.

"All prizes were hampers of food and drink and a special sweet hamper went to The Orchard for their fabulous entry of The Six Nations."

The seven winners were:

18 Summerfield Road - Save our Planet

7 Trentham Road - Scarecrow and Scarecow

19 Sun Grove - Scarecrow Day Off

The Hollies - Worzel and Aunt Sally date night
