A TOWN’S mayor is standing down after two years in the role.

Burnham mayor Wendy Stamp will step down later this month.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Burnham Town Council was unable to hold its annual meeting and mayor-making ceremony.

Mrs Stamp said she had no other option but to resign.

In a letter to the town clerk, she said: “I have happily served our wonderful town as the mayor for two wonderful, often challenging years but it is time to allow another councillor the opportunity to take the council to another level.

“Sadly there is no other option but to resign for this to happen.

“I wish to thank you for all your hard work.

“You have worked tirelessly, professionally and happily with me.

“Whilst we haven’t completed all the many tasks we have undertaken we are not far away.

“I also wish to thank the office team and my fellow councillors.

“Despite many challenging meetings and discussions, I do believe we all work for the benefit of our lovely town.

“Thanks to my lovely family who has supported me through my busy time as mayor.

“Finally a huge special thank you for all the invitations I received and endeavoured to attend as many as humanly possible – I met hundreds of wonderful people.

“I have been honoured to represent Burnham on Crouch and ask you to accept my resignation.”

Mrs Stamp added: “Burnham is often under-rated and overlooked, except for overdevelopment and under investment for its community spirit and unsung volunteers.

“We all must continue to cherish and work hard to keep our unique community spirit because when it’s gone, it’s gone

“I wish the new mayor every success and hope they enjoy representing our stunning town as much as I have.”
