A NUMBER of colleagues at a supermarket have been self-isolating after two cases of coronavirus were confirmed yesterday.

Tesco Superstore in Martins Heron, Whitton Road said two employees had tested positive for Covid-19.

Today, a spokesman for Tesco confirmed that the colleagues have not been in store since Friday, July 3.

Tesco said: "Neither colleague has been in store since 3 July. They had not been at work for a number of days when they tested positive. Both colleagues have completed the Government Track and Trace process and as a result a small number of other colleagues are self-isolating as a precaution but have not tested positive."

However, shoppers have been questioning how Tesco have handled the situation.

One concerned resident, whose wife works in the store, claimed there are 'no procedures' in place for staff or customers safety.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "There are vulnerable people working there and no one feels safe at the best of times.

"When my wife found out she wondered why the managers didn't shut the store. There needs to be stricter procedures in place. I've looked on the Tesco website and they do carry out risk assessments for health and safety but there are no temperature checks in store. They did have one way systems and you'd have to wait to go inside but now anyone just walks in."

Another person said: "Why is the store is still open when two of the staff there tested positive for coronavirus? Other staff were told about this on Monday 6th July. Surely the store should be closed and all staff should be isolating for 14 days?"

Despite this, the supermarket said they have a 'robust response plan in place' when it comes to dealing with Covid-19 and haven't told customers that they need to self-isolate.

Shoppers are also reminded that hand sanitisers are placed around the store as well as extra cleaning products for customers to wipe down their trolley and basket.

Tesco also said they are working with Bracknell Forest Council (BFC) following national guidance.

Timothy Wheadon, chief executive at BFC, said: "We are continuing to work with the lead agency, Public Health England (PHE), about the cases at Martins Heron Tesco.

"We will be acting on their advice and providing information for residents as soon as PHE determine the next steps.”
