A PREGNANT mum is furious after being told she would have to break her self-isolation to claim a refund after out-of-date food was delivered to her home.

Hayley Sims, 27, says she and 18-month-old son Hugo both became ill after eating bread which was already two days past its expiry date when their Tesco delivery arrived at their home in Maldon.

She says they both spent a day and a half vomiting.

Hayley, who is seven months pregnant, has been self-isolating for 12 weeks after the Government advised that pregnant woman are among the most vulnerable during the pandemic.

She said: “Our order came on May 20 and the vitamin bread that we had ordered actually expired on May 18, two days before it was even delivered.

“Myself and my son had been eating this and I wondered how we have been sick when we haven’t left the house.”

Hayley says Tesco refused to resolve the issue to her satisfaction unless she went into the store to fill out a form and return the bread.

“I called Tesco support and they initially offered £5 and after me getting upset offered me £10,” she said.

“Our order each week comes to £140, which is an insult.

“They couldn’t offer any more unless I came into the store to fill out a form.

“Bear in mind I am on the vulnerable list and won’t be putting myself, my baby’s and son’s life at risk to return a loaf of bread, which surely can be resolved over email in 2020. We are now going to be ordering our food from somewhere else.”

Tesco has now apologised.

A spokesman said: “We are very sorry this happened and would like to offer this customer a full refund for the item.

“For customers self-isolating and receiving online grocery orders, we are able to process refunds over the phone.”
