Tesco has announced it is to help groups within Sutton by offering £500 grants in light of the outbreak.
The offer is a part of Tesco’s pledge to provide a £30million package of support ('Bags of Help’) to local communities.
Cancer charity, Maggie’s, located at the Royal Marsden in Sutton, has used the grant to change their face to face support to online and telephone services.
The grants aim to help groups including; women’s refuges, food banks, hospices, homeless charities, social isolation groups, schools, charities supporting the elderly and local authorities.
A spokesperson for Tesco, said: “It is important for us to reach people who need our help across our local community.
This funding will be directly provided to those food banks, charities and groups who need it more than ever.
"We are also supporting the Government’s programme to feed the most vulnerable, through our online grocery service and donating £3million worth of meals a month.
“We are doing everything we can to provide food for all at this difficult time.
“Hopefully the £500 bags of Help grant will help those groups still committed to helping others during this uncertain time.”
The process is managed through Tesco's partner charity, Groundwork’s website.
CEO of Groundwork UK, Graham Duxbury, said: “We know that small amounts of money provided quickly could make a real difference to local charities supporting vulnerable and isolated members of the community.
"This is why we are pleased to have changed the Bags of Help programme to provide rapid support where it’s needed most."
Charities and groups in Sutton have been urged to apply for the grant at https://tescobagsofhelp.org.uk/
