Sutton Council has launched a support hub to provide food and essential items to those in need during the coronavirus outbreak.

Over 700 residents have volunteered to ' Sutton Hub', which launched yesterday, March 29.

Council staff and volunteers spent their Sunday organising food packages to deliver to residents within the area.

The council will direct vulnerable residents to local charities who will be able to offer them emotional support.

Charities, Community Action Sutton, Volunteer Centre Sutton, and Age UK Sutton - have taken the lead for coordinating the voluntary sector response and are working closely with the Council.

'Sutton hub' has successfully reached those classed as 'high risk' and have been able to reach vulnerable members in the community who have filled out online forms.

Councillor Ruth Dombey said: “I am proud of the amazing response from our community in Sutton.

"It shows the wonderful things our community is capable of doing.

"People have stepped up from across the borough to help those in need.”

Councillor Marian James said: “The outpouring of support from the community has been heartwarming.

" I’d like to thank each of our charities, residents and local groups who have come forward to help others during the current situation.”
