TENS of thousands of residents, businesses and groups took part in a nationwide show of support for the NHS.

The coordinated clap took part at 8pm on Thursday after a campaign gathered pace on social media.

Using the hashtags #ThankYouNHS and #ClapForOurCarers many showed their efforts through videos and pictures.

The Royal Family and the prime minister joined well-wishers from Barrow, Millom, Ulverston and beyond who flocked to their balconies, front doorsteps and windows to applaud.

Prince Charles, 71, was pictured at Birkhall, his private home on the Balmoral estate in Scotland.

Camilla, who is isolating from Charles, was seen in separate footage clapping on her own as she looked out of an open window.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate, posted a video of their three children George, Charlotte and Louis, clapping, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak also joined in from Downing Street.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex posted a message on their Instagram story, writing: "Thank you for all that you continue to do! Applauding you from across the pond."

In Barrow thousands opened their front doors and applauded the local NHS workers who have been going above and beyond amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Ship horns from Barrow Docks and fireworks were also heard.

Furness GP Geoff Jolliffe, who is also clinical chair of the Morecambe Bay CCG Commissioning Group, also took part to praise his colleagues.

"Thank you Barrow, you don't disappoint," he said.

"Great clap. Not to mention ships' horns."

A message from the NHS on social media described the tribute as 'emotional'.

Celebrities also took part including Daniel Craig who filmed himself clapping.

A number of national landmarks, including the Wembley Arch and Royal Albert Hall were lit up in tribute.
