ESSEX Trading Standards is urging the public to be on the lookout for those trying to exploit vulnerable customers as the Covid-19 crisis deepens.

Following reports of scammers exploiting the outbreak for their own gains, the organisation has issued advice to members of the public who are worried about their neighbours.

A spokesman for Essex Trading Standards said: “We have received a number of queries about individuals and businesses exploiting the current Covid-19 situation and selling products at very high prices.

“Although this does not breach any regulations that Trading Standards cover, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) are keen to receive reports.

“We urge retailers to behave responsibly throughout the coronavirus outbreak and not to make misleading claims or charge vastly inflated prices.

“We also remind members of the public these obligations may apply to them too if they resell goods, for example on online marketplaces.”

Reports should be sent to general.enquiries@cma.gov.uk, including contact details.
