The first band in the line-up for an amazing season of musical events has been revealed.

MacTheatre is introducing Maldon to a series of high calibre artists, starting off in inimitable style with the superb Dempsey Broughton at Maldon’s Sunny Sailor this Sunday.

Made up of acoustic guitarist and singer Kevin Dempsey (Whippersnapper) and phenomenal fiddle and mandolin player Joe Broughton (Urban Folk Quartet), the musical duo are said to be a joy to experience for players and listeners alike.

As well as incorporating their folk roots, their sound also covers jazz, pop, classical and soul, and their arrangements and improvisations often take them into unchartered territory.

A spokesman said: “It’s always a fantastic night at the Sunny – they’re just the tonic to lift the spirit!

“It’s set to be a cultural night of exquisite playing, unrivalled instrumental capability, always playful, always entertaining and thrilling to watch.

“The evening promises a broad mix of material from across their careers, along with new songs and plenty surprises to delight their audiences.

“Many will be most familiar with Joe Broughton as the ringmaster of the Urban Folk Quartet, who just celebrated ten years of performing together last year and who are regulars on the Maldon circuit, while Kevin Dempsey has recently been touring his much-loved solo show throughout the UK and Europe.

“It’s a real privilege to have them playing again in Maldon.”

Combining emotive songs and impromptu ad libs, the duo are set to create a spellbinding atmosphere through their instrumentation and a spectacular high-energy, exciting show.

MacTheatre director Nicola Esson said: “It’s fantastic to have such brilliant musicians playing in Maldon.

“They tour all over the world and here they are on a Sunday evening, down by the river at the Sunny Sailor.

“It will be a sensational night.”

Tickets cost £15 and the show starts at 7.30pm.
