DELIGHTED organisers of Maldon’s world-famous mud race have released the final figures revealing how much money was raised last year.

The race, which sets off from Promenade Park, sees around 20,000 people come from all over the world to watch the 300 entrants get down and dirty for a charity of their choosing.

As well as bringing community cheer to the district each year, the race also raises massive amounts of cash for good causes.

A spokesman said: “After having a full complement of 300 runners taking part in the 2019 Maldon Mud Race back in May, we’re now delighted to confirm, based on the fundraising and donations from the runners, we’ve been able to donate huge sums to some brilliant local charities.”

The grand total, presented at a recent awards ceremony at the Porsche Centre Colchester, came to £11,000.

The spokesman added: “At the moment the 2020 Maldon Mud Race looks set to be another hugely successful event with over two-thirds of the 300 spaces already sold with under four months to go.”

Preparations are already under way for this year’s event, which will take place on Sunday, May 3.

Last year’s mud race is donating £2,500 to Essex and Hertfordshire Air Ambulance, £1,500 to Brainwave, £1,500 to Little Havens Hospice, £1,000 to Farleigh Hospice, £1,000 to the Daniel Wilkinson Foundation, £1,000 to Action For Family Carers, £1,000 to the Cinnamon Trust, £1,000 to the David Randall Foundation and £500 to the Rotary Club of Maldon.
