ANGRY residents have hit out at plans for 36 new homes which they say will stretch services in Burnham.

David Wilson Homes’ application for housing on land between Chandlers, Creeksea Lane and Maldon Road, was submitted last month.

Residents say the houses are in addition to the 108 homes already agreed for the area.

They also claim that more houses would put a strain on their already struggling schools and GPs.

One resident, who objected to the application, said: “This application is in excess of the 180 houses already agreed on that site in both the Local Development Plan and the Burnham Neighbourhood Plan.

“If granted, this would take extra approved developments in Burnham to well over twice the 450 target approved on July 21, 2017, by the Secretary of State for the entire 15-year period of the Local Development Plan.

“As a result of being supplied with excessive new housing and residents, Burnham is now extremely short of adequate NHS facilities and access to GPs, education facilities for infant, primary and secondary school ages, and totally inadequate infrastructure.

“There is little work nearby. The country roads in and out of Burnham are already busy and often dangerous and the train service at peak times is not good enough for people having to travel to work outside the town.

“Our district has over the statutory five-year land supply so Maldon District Council should therefore reject this application.”

Other residents have also objected. One said: “There are no provisions to cope with the extra traffic, school places and NHS services for houses already approved but not yet built or occupied.”

Another said: “Burnham already has severe and growing shortages of local pre-school, primary and secondary school local capacity together with major shortfalls in local NHS capability.

“The town does not need any more ugly housing units crammed into it.

“The Burnham West development is already far removed from the high-quality sympathetic rural and coastal design principles set out in the Local Development Plan and Burnham Neighbourhood Plan.

“Please do not impose anymore boxy mass-produced houses on the town. Ever.”

Maldon District Council will have the final say on the application.
