A VILLAGE’S oldest resident united Purleigh as they gathered to celebrate his centenary.

Veteran Fred Farquharson was delighted last Wednesday as he was joined by villagers, close friends Bernie Steeples and Karen Elliot, and two sons Geoffrey and Richard.

Geoffrey said: “We had a great time celebrating Dad’s 100th birthday last week.

“Over 70 people attended the party – about 20 relatives from as far as Birmingham and Aberdeen, and 50 friends mainly from Purleigh, including many from the bowls club.

“Dad really enjoyed the day and was particularly thrilled to see some people he had not seen for years.

“One of Dad’s nieces made the cake which featured a caravan, indoor bowls and emblems of India where Dad spent some of the war.

“He received many fine cards and presents, for which he says thank you very much.

“Instead of a present some people donated money to the Gurkha Welfare Trust which dad supports as they saved his life in Burma.

“He has great respect for the bravery of the Gurkhas.”

Fred fought in the 14th Army – also known as the ‘Forgotten Army’ – during the Second World War before later settling down in the village.
