ICONIC is a word which is often overused.
But there is no other way to describe the Thames barges which grace Maldon’s Hythe Quay.
These historic vessels have become a majestic part of the riverside scenery in Maldon.
It would be a tragedy if that became a thing of the past.
So proposals to whack up mooring fees for these ships should be handled with caution.
Maldon District Council – like all local authorities – is understandably keen to boost income after years of government austerity cuts.
But is it worth risking one of the town’s biggest tourist attractions?
This is a delicate balancing act which needs great care if it is to provide an outcome which benefits all concerned.
