A sailing club has raised hundreds of pounds for a dictionary which aims to educate children on England’s ‘lost words’.

Maldon’s Little Ship Club hosted a soup lunch, raising £450 for Essex Wildlife Trust’s Lost Words appeal.

The appeal was set up in response to changes to the Junior Oxford Dictionary. Common environmental words such as acorn, otter, kingfisher and wren have been dropped in favour of words such as broadband and voicemail.

The trust is funding a Lost Words book which it has pledged to place in all 800 schools in Essex.

The beautifully illustrated book will allow children to grow up remembering nature’s lost words.

Diana Rogers, who organised the lunch, said: “We are overwhelmed with all the support we receive for our monthly charity soup lunches and this was the biggest one to date.

“It has developed into a friendship group which is very rewarding, especially as all our takings benefit local charities like Essex Wildlife Trust.”

The next lunch is on Tuesday, February 11 from noon until 2pm.
