A NAUTICAL volunteer has been given a prestigious royal reward for his work afloat.

Captain Ian Chapman works on the historic steam tug Brent in Maldon and supported the commemoration of Merchant Navy Day earlier this year.

Two days later, Mr Chapman’s name was on the list of those who would be awarded the Merchant Navy Medal.

The Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service is a state award within the British honours system.

The medal is awarded to no more than 20 recipients annually who are announced on Merchant Navy Day in Trafalgar Square.

Ian’s award was presented to him by Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal at Trinity House in London.

After the ceremony he had opportunity to talk to Princess Anne as well as the other medal recipients.

Janet Hall, chair of the Steam Tug Brent Trust, said: “Ian received his award for ‘services to the careers of young seafarers and a maritime charity’ – the maritime charity being the Steam Tug Brent Trust.

“Ian is a trustee and works as a volunteer on board whenever he has opportunity.

“Fellow Brent trustees, and volunteers alike, greatly appreciate being able to call on Ian’s expertise in maritime matters.

“We value his opinion and the work he does for the trust. Our congratulations to master mariner Captain Ian Chapman MNM.”
