I READ and hear so much about Maldon District Council taking over the site of Maldon Yacht Club and replacing the club with beach huts.

I would point out I am not a boat person unless there is food, entertainment and hot and cold running water. It’s called a cruise ship.

Regarding Maldon Yacht Club, it is a shame but in the first instance I feel that the club is its own worst enemy.

Part of the site looks like a graveyard for boats that haven’t seen the briny for years and the clubhouse is on the tilt and looks like it will slide into the water has been built on the hull of a barge.

However, does this not have its own appeal?

In my younger days I thought yacht club members were the rich and famous with clubs being very affluent.

This is not the case for Maldon Yacht Club which has that approachable feel.

Removing the club and replacing it with beach huts is an insult to the 75 years of happy sailing.

I find it difficult to believe that people will hire the beach huts then on a sunny day race off to the mud with their towels to find an ideal spot to sunbathe.

Nor will they walk up to the High Street and buy a pair of socks to bring more business to the town.

I find it a pleasure to walk along the prom and stroll up to Bryhtnoth and watch the boating in safe waters.

This is a maritime town not Clacton, Frinton or Walton where beach huts are the norm.

I look at the brave warrior Bryhtnoth and wonder what he would say being flanked by beach huts. Think again councillors. Penny for your thoughts Bryhtnoth.
