Maldon Film Club has seen a highly successful season this month, with three of the first screenings receiving ratings of over 80% from the town’s film enthusiasts.
The season continues Tuesday, November 19 with a showing of the Oscar nominated Polish masterpiece ‘Cold War’, the most anticipated film of the season.
Described by Washington Post as “a near-perfect film, an artfully crafted, flawlessly acted meditation on love, memory and invented history that’s both deeply personal and politically attuned”, it’s not one to miss.
In the ruins of post-war Poland, Wiktor and Zula fall deeply, obsessively and destructively in love.
As performing musicians forced to pay into the Soviet propaganda machine, they dream of escaping to the creative freedom of the West.
However, one day, as they spot their chance to make a break for Paris, both make a decision that will mark their lives forever.
Common Sense Media said: “For a black-and-white film with such an unsparing, unsentimental approach, this romance manages to feel lush, passionate, and stark all at once.”
Fourteen films are still to be screened including Fisherman’s Friends, Return to Cuba, If Beale street Could Talk, Stan and Ollie, Peterloo, Capernaum, Balloon and the all-time classic A Taste of Honey.
A spokesman said: “As a member you will be asked to give your reaction to the films you have seen to help the committee compile the programme for the following season.
“Membership is open to all and new members will be made very welcome.”
The film will be shown at 8pm in Maldon Town Hall. An annual subscription costs £25 or guests can pay £3 per film.
