A RESIDENT is using money he received as an apology from a delivery company to help pay for a dementia nurse for his town.
Burnham man Andrew Whitworth is raising money for a Dengie Admiral Nurse with £200 he received as an apology from Amazon.
He received the money after a video he posted of a delivery driver throwing his new microwave over his gate reached thousands on social media.
He will be hosting a raffle and the funds will go toward Support an Essex Admiral Nurse (SEAN), a charity aiming to raise £50,000 for a community dementia nurse for the Dengie.
Andrew said: “Everyone’s so upset with the way they handled the delivery. People were really disheartened.
“Instead of keeping the money I thought I’d do a raffle and raise money for the community.”
He will also be auctioning the replacement microwave he received.
Andrew added: “I’ve had fantastic support so far, it makes me feel really proud. Burnham’s a very lovely community with fantastic people.
“Everyone says hello in the morning, a simple but lovely thing. If there’s something I can do to help the community out I’m glad to help.”
SEAN has raised nearly £38,000 of the £50,000 target.
Peter Argall, from SEAN, said: “We came together about two years ago because of personal experiences that showed us there’s a lack of support for dementia in the Dengie.
“There are now some Admiral Nurses in Essex, but they tend to be based in hospitals and hospices, so there’s not many community-based nurses.
“Andrew has very kindly volunteered to raise some money for a nurse that would make a huge difference.”
Andrew and wife Jane are urging businesses to help sell raffle tickets or donate prizes.
The raffle will be held on Saturday, December 14 at Bar 3 in Station Road from 8pm.
Tickets will cost £2.50 each, or £10 for five.
