Sparks are set to light up Burnham this Saturday as the annual Great Bonfire night returns.

The fiery display will take place at St Mary’s Church on Saturday and light up the town.

Hundreds are expected to bring along their own fireworks to fuel the hour-long spectacular.

A Best Dressed Guy competition will take place at the church at 3.45pm tomorrow to choose which Guy will be sacrificed.

Organiser Jeremy Cousins said: “We are hopeful we will get over a thousand people turn up again, just like last year.

“The highlight of the evening has to be the firework display.

“We encourage people to bring along single large fireworks rather than small boxes of multiple fireworks.

“These form the basis of the display and thanks to the contributions, last year the fireworks went on for nearly an hour.

“It’s an important event to Burnham as it’s the only free display open to the public and it’s a really family-friendly atmosphere.

“It started about seven to eight years ago and has grown over the years to the size it is now thanks to the support of Burnham Town Council and a number of local businesses.”

Mr Cousins added: “This is a large event for such a small church, but it has proven so popular that we want to keep it going.

“There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to get everything ready.

“We have had volunteers from across the community offering support, but we can always do with more.

“We welcome anyone willing to offer their time on November 1 to help build the bonfire or on November 2 at the actual event.”

Doors open at 6pm, and local band the FBD Project will be performing. Food and drinks will also be available.
