WORK on a bridge which was expected to reopen in the autumn could continue until the end of the year.

The Mundon Wash Bridge was closed on April 23 this year to allow for essential repair works to take place until the autumn time.

But Essex Highways now says “uncontrollable” factors have led to the project slipping behind schedule.

A highways spokesman said: “Unfortunately, our planned programme has been delayed due to factors beyond our control, including weather which affected concrete pouring and curing.

“We were obliged to further delay delivery of the box-culvert pre-cast concrete units that are the main structural elements of the bridge.

“We are now doing everything possible to make up some of the time lost, with completion of all works expected in December.

“Since the previous update, progress has been made and the southwest wing is complete.

“Works will now take place on the north side of the structure.

“We would like to thank residents and businesses for their continued patience while we carry out these works.”

The bridge, which dates back to the 1940s, has had to be replaced to strengthen it.
