Classes in a rare form of martial art are taking place in Maldon and Steeple.

Baguazhang - also known as Bagua - is one of the ‘internal’ martial arts of China and is renowned for its health benefits for adults of all ages.

Ba Gua Zhang means ‘Eight Trigram palm,’ named after the trigrams of the I Ching, an ancient book of wisdom also known as The Book of Changes.

A spokesman said: “Remaining centred whilst adapting to change is one of the aims and benefits of Bagua.

“One of the characteristics of the art is the practice of circle walking.

“This brings together mindful walking along with spiralling postures and relaxed whole-body movement that open up and improve the energies in the body.

“Learning Bagua has many benefits. It aligns, loosens and strengthens the body, improves balance and stability, circulation, bodily relaxation and flexibility, breathing and co-ordination.”

The martial art is also believed to promote relaxed mental focus, memory and a feeling of general well-being.

The spokesman added: “Although learning Baguazhang can be physically and mentally demanding at times, each person learns and trains at their own pace.”

Classes aim to provide individual coaching in a friendly setting. Classes cost £8, but the first one is free.

The classes take place at Steeple Village Hall on Thursdays from 7.30pm to 8.30pm and at Maldon Community Centre on Fridays from 1.45pm to 2.45pm.
