Swimmers have been urged to stop misusing a free saltwater pool.

Woodup pool is a chlorine- free mini beach that has long been a hidden gem for Tollesbury villagers to enjoy.

But recently the pool, which has been open for more than 100 years, has faced mobs of newcomers after it gained popularity on social media as the summer months broke record temperatures.

The parish council faced rising costs for marshalling the spot due to people illegally parking on the highway and leaving litter behind, which could affect the pool’s future.

A source who did not wish to be named said: “Litter has got so bad now volunteers are forced to clear the pool.

“The bins in the beach area and surrounding grassy areas are over-filling daily and plastic is floating away.

“As more inconsiderate visitors treat the pool with such disrespect the cost to the parish council increases yearly which seriously threatens its future.”

Parish councillor Steve O’Donnell said visitors needed to show respect.

He said: “For a newcomer to come to the pool and see litter, it’s an eyesore.

“I really enjoy new people coming to the pool and enjoying themselves, but I just really wish they would take their litter home with them.

“There is also a car park 150 yards away from the pool, so there’s no need to park on the highway. I ensure Tollesbury Parish Council will do everything possible to keep the pool open as the people love it.”

The council raises money for the pool every other year through barbecues and events in order to keep up with the running costs and pay for its upkeep.

Mr O’Donnell added: “I would say to anyone misusing the pool could you please ensure you take your rubbish home with you.

“It’s ruining the outlook of the pool and it’s not nice other people have to later pick it up.”
