TWO brave police officers have been at a special ceremony after attending to a suicidal man near a burning car.

Proud family members and special guests gathered at a ceremony at Essex Police headquarters to celebrate the brave and courageous actions of seven officers who saved lives in dangerous and difficult situations.

Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington awarded the individuals with a commendation, which is one of the highest honours a Chief Constable can give.

In June 2018, PC Jason Keyte and PC Martin Baumber attended an incident where they found a car completely engulfed in flames on an unlit country road in Purleigh.

The officers found an extremely distressed and suicidal man at the scene.

They used their negotiation skills to speak to him and help keep him safe.

The officers then secured the area and ensured that no members of the public were harmed however both officers themselves were injured during the incident.

Martin and Jason were commended for their bravery, professionalism and selfless actions throughout the incident.

Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington said: “It always brings me great pleasure to host these ceremonies to celebrate ordinary individuals taking extraordinary steps to help save the lives of others, protect the vulnerable and keep the people of Essex safe.

“It might be what our officers, staff and volunteers do on a daily basis, but their actions are courageous, and I take great pride in being able to award them.”

Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Jane Gardner added: “It’s a privilege to be here today to pass on my thanks on behalf of the public.

“Each time I attend award ceremonies like these, every officer is so humble when accepting their awards.

“Speaking to the public at meetings, they are always grateful for the sacrifices and brave actions of their officers."
