Courtauld Bowls Club in final push for clubhouse funds

Courtauld Bowls Club, in Colchester Road, was founded in 1921.

The club initially unveiled plans for a new clubhouse in 2017 and had hoped to finish the work by the start of last year.

But after setbacks and delays, the club is now trying to generate more funds so it can complete the refurbishment work on its improved facility.

Money raised so far, through several charity events including a quiz night, an auction and a race evening, has gone into building a main extension.

Now an additional £5,000 on top of the £35,000 already spent is needed if the indoor improvements are to be completed in time for club’s centenary celebrations, which will take place in two years’ time.

Bowls club vice-chairman Patrick Ashcroft said: “The existing clubhouse was an old temporary school building which was erected by members in the early 1990s.

“Its changing and washroom facilities were outdated and inadequate.

“But when it is completed Halstead will have a lawn bowls facility suitable for hosting county matches and it will be equal or superior to any other in the region.”

The club, which has more than 100 registered members and frequently competes in leagues and competitions, has also recently applied to the council for help with funding.

The new extension, which is a prefabricated structure from local timber suppliers Flight Timber Products, will feature brand new lavatories, accessible toilets for people with disabilities and more modern changing rooms.

Mr Ashcroft said: “The internal finishing work will be completed by members of the club and will include new gents, ladies, and accessible toilets and changing rooms.

“We are also looking to make improvements in the kitchen but this has not yet been started.”

Upcoming fundraisers include an afternoon cream tea and dance on August 18, a quiz night on September 20 and a cockney-themed evening on November 2.
