CONSERVATIVE MPs across Sussex have said they are eagerly awaiting the results of leadership election.

Tomorrow it will be announced whether Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt has become the Tory leader and therefore Prime Minister.

Many MPs have been vocal in their support for former foreign secretary Boris Johnson.

Crawley MP Henry Smith he expected the former mayor of London to be victorious.

“Boris certainly has a fair chance in the membership vote as well as the support of MPs and councillors across the country,” he said.

“I think he needs to establish his cabinet allies once his is elected.

“We have a very odd situation currently where we have a major crisis with Iran but our foreign secretary is busy campaigning for the leadership election and another foreign minister, Alan Duncan, has resigned.

“I think what he will need to do is assemble his leadership team quickly to get us focused on the day-to-day issues.

“Boris is ready to tackle the pressing issues as well as announcing more police and more funding for our schools.”

But when Mr Smith was quizzed on possibly landing a job as a minister, the Crawley MP said he did not expect a role in Mr Johnson’s Government.

Worthing West MP Sir Peter Bottomley refused to state which candidate he voted for when quizzed by the Argus.

But he did indicate he preferred foreign secretary Mr Hunt.

He said: “In public I said I would endorse Sir Graham Brady if he ran, and Jeremy Hunt if Sir Graham did not.

“I also said if I supported Boris Johnson I would have endorsed him already.

“I don’t think it’s wise to predict the result of the vote when experts got the EU referendum result wrong and Jeremy Corbyn’s election to the Labour party wrong.”

Other Sussex MPs have been more clear-cut about their support in the race for the Conservative leadership.

Both Tim Loughton and Maria Caulfield have come out as supporters of Mr Johnson.

Neither wanted to comment on the race when asked by the Argus.

Meanwhile, Nick Herbert, Huw Merriman, and Amber Rudd have all endorsed Mr Hunt.

But Horsham MP Jeremy Quin said he would not declare for either candidate as he was a Government whip.
