THREE friends are putting together a charity match in memory of their football-playing friend.

Southminster FC boss Tommy Fulton, 26, Mayland FC manager Will Dowzall, 26, and Southminster player Tom Sims, 26, are to stage the tribute game in memory of friend Toby Group.

Toby, who played for Southminster FC and grew up in the town, struggled emotionally with the loss of his father, who died of cancer two years ago.

Toby tragically died on November 15, aged 26.

Now, his childhood pals are staging the memorial to raise money for the Cancer Research UK and Live Life Give Life charities.

Tommy said Toby was a kind, helpful person and respected the village he grew up in.

He said: “Toby was a wonderful young man who set his goals and achieved them.

“He was shy person when you first met him, but once he knew you, he was full of life and laughter.

“Will, Tom and I all grew up with Toby and we were all devastated when we heard the news of his passing.

“We all wanted to honour Toby in a way that we felt he would like and felt fitting, and that was going to be a football game between Southminster and Mayland.

“We decided that, while playing this game, we would raise money for charity.”

After talking with Toby’s mum Bridget, they close Cancer Research UK because Toby’s dad had died from the disease, and Live Life Give Life, which helps with organ donations as Toby was an organ donor.

Tommy added: “We have been putting work into gaining raffle prizes and trying to get items to auction.

“Anyone can come watch the game and support both sides – the more the merrier – and any donations are welcomed and much appreciated.”

The game will take place on Sunday, May 26, at the King George V playing field in Southminster, with a 1.30pm kick-off.

Before the game, there will be a minute’s applause in memory of Toby and after the game the teams and spectators will be heading to the Kings Head pub, in Southminster, for a memorial toast.
