MEMBERS of the community were given prestigious awards for their work at an annual ceremony.

The Pride of Maldon Awards recognise outstanding members of the Maldon community in several categories.

Following a speech about what makes Maldon so special from Plume Academy principal Carl Wakefield and music from Plume pupils Cameron Morrison and singers Beth and Ella Butcher, the awards were presented by Maldon Town Council members and town mayor Jeanette Stilts.

The Pride of Maldon Award went to Tesco Community Champion Rhiain Oakley for fundraising for charities, giving away surplus food to groups and helping out colleagues taking part in the Maldon Mud Race.

Mrs Stilts said: “Rhiain’s dedication and commitment to use her position to support good causes within the Maldon community deserves special recognition.

“She influences the lives of numerous people and works tirelessly to go the extra mile.”

Citizen of the Year went to Maldon in Bloom chair Dorreen Linton for her efforts over many years with several organisations which have had a massive impact on Maldon.

Carer of the Year went to Stephen Park for the way he cares for his partner and supports other groups.

He is also an active member of the Maldon and Dengie Stroke Support Group and founder member of Maldon’s Aphasia Café.

Young Achiever of the Year went to Plume pupil Honey Lock, who has cerebral palsy and has showed tremendous resilience to extreme adversity.

Educator of the Year went to Plume principal Carl Wakefield who has greatly raised the standards at the school.

The Community Impact Award went to Steve Cant, from Appletons, who does such an important job clearing up the litter in the town centre.

Long Service Volunteer went to David Wren for his work with the Maldon and Dengie Stroke Support and Carers Group. The Arts and Culture Award went to Neil Fisher, of Maldon Drama Group. He conceived, researched, wrote and produced the First World War centenary show Hope Flowers which sold out and raised £3,100 for the poppy appeal.

Best Business Contribution to the Community went to David and Tracy Pitt from Blackwater Seafood.

Finally, the Services to the Community Award went to Douglas Scurrey, who has been selling poppies in the town centre for the Royal British Legion for many years.
