KEEN gardeners are urged to prepare for an annual flower show which returns this summer.

Tolleshunt D’Arcy Flower Show will be taking place on July 6 and is organised by the chairman of the village horticultural society.

The event, in the marquee on the recreation ground, will be a combination of vegetable and flower competitions, classes and activities.

The society is hoping visitors have prepared their seeds or photographs in time for the show.

Chairman Leigh Arnold said: “It may seem like a long way away, but now is the time to start planning for this year’s show.

“There is always lots to do in the garden, even at this time of year so spend an evening looking at this year’s schedule of classes.

“Our first show was held in 1884 so this will be our 135th show.

“Our committee tries to combine the show’s history with new innovations added over the years. We introduced photography classes many years ago and now this is one of our most popular sections. Community is important to us and we work with St Nicholas’ Primary School who will often show work from their children.

“Our small committee works each year to ensure the show can continue and that everyone who comes along enjoys themselves.

“The only funding we receive is from those who support us each year and from the income we generate on the day. Each year we aim to break even so we can keep putting on the show year after year, although we are not always successful.

“Costs – especially for the insurance and the traditional canvas marquee – have risen in recent years but we’re committed to keeping up the village tradition.

“I hope to see you at the show this year whether you enter a few classes or are just visiting to admire everyone else’s efforts and spend some time taking in some of our stalls and activities – and don’t forget our fun dog show.”

Parking is available on the day. For more details, visit darcyhortsoc.co.uk.
