AN arts venue in Maldon is starting its spring season with a performance from a folk music duo.

MacTheatre hosts Dempsey Broughton at the Sunny Sailor in Fullbridge on Sunday.

Guitarist and singer Kevin Dempsey and fiddle and mandolin player Joe Broughton first teamed up 20 years ago. Due to their separate touring schedules, it has been difficult to play together so the evening’s performance is expected to be a rare one.

Although their music is rooted in folk, they show exceptional versatility in sounds and styles from the four corners of the world and their experience in jazz, soul, classical, pop and rock takes the result into original and unchartered territory.

Combining emotive songs and impromptu banter, they create a spellbinding atmosphere through their instrumentation and a spectacular high-energy and exciting show.

The duo’s spring appearances promises a broad mix of material from across their career, along with new songs and plenty surprises to delight their audiences.

Many will be most familiar with Joe Broughton as the ringmaster of the Urban Folk Quartet, who have performed in Maldon for a number of years, while Kevin Dempsey has recently been touring with Jacqui McShee’s Pentangle.

The gig starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £15.
