A Burnham adventurer has become only the seventh woman in the world to complete a solo rowing voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.

After 53 days and 3,000 miles of rowing from Gran Canaria to Barbados, PC Dawn Wood has finally made it to land.

A Facebook live video showed her slowly pulling in to the harbour while friends and family waved Union Jack flags and cheered.

As the boat docked, Dawn let out a roar of success and hugged her husband, mum and dad.

Dawn, who was also raising awareness about plastic pollution, said: “I’m in Barbados. We made it!”

She then stepped off the boat and was greeted by everyone including members of the Rotary Club of Barbados and minister of culture and sports John King.

A spokesman for the club said: “The captain, the heart and the soul of True Blue rowed her way into history this morning and in doing so raised awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastics.

“Well done Dawn.

"On behalf of the Rotary Club of Barbados we thank you for your bravery and your immense passion for this cause.”

Burnham Mayor Wendy Stamp said: "I am sure the whole of Burnham on Crouch sends heartfelt congratulations to Dawn for the completion and amazing achievement rowing the Atlantic Ocean in her quest to raise awareness on environmental issues.

“The sublime strength of character, determination, and perseverance she has demonstrated is applauded and admired by all.

“Dawn is one in a million and I personally thank her for setting such a high standard that we can all aspire to in various walks of life."

Dawn also enjoyed a victory beer.

She is expected back in England in the coming weeks.
