A care home in Maldon has been told it needs to improve after being inspected by watchdogs.

St Peter’s Court, in Spital Road, requires improvement in all areas after two inspections this year by the Care Quality Commission.

The home was rated good in 2016 before a change of ownership in December 2017.

The report said: “This inspection was prompted in part by a notification of an incident, following which a person using the service died.

“This incident is subject to an investigation and as a result this inspection did not examine the circumstances of the incident.”

The report says inspectors received mixed reviews on whether staffing levels were adequate to meet people’s needs.

Inspectors said: “Some staff told us ‘It’s OK, we can manage if we work together’ and ‘I think we all work well together’ but others told us ‘We don’t have enough staff all the time, it’s hard to get all the tasks completed when you are short’ and ‘We just get on with it. Well you have to for the people here.’

“A relative told us, ‘They have a lot of people who wander here and they need someone all the time. I personally don’t know how they cope.’”

The inspectors were also informed that since the beginning of this year, there had been at least four different manager changes.

The report said there were still areas that required improvement, despite managers at St Peter’s Court working with an audit company to ensure that the care home was compliant.

However, the report showed that residents were well-fed, had their privacy respected and all complaints were dealt with in a timely way.

The report said the care home will need to work to improve its number of qualified staff, management of care records, safety in receiving medicine and reducing risk.

The Standard contacted Legacy Care, which runs the home, but the company declined to comment.
